Church situation not as dire as reported
Published Date:

MAY I correct one or two misapprehensions arising from the front page article about St. Nicholas Church a couple of weeks ago.
Contrary to what was said, the congregations haven't halved - indeed if anything they have grown slightly. What has gone down is the number on the Church Electoral Roll (nothing to do with the parish electoral roll), but this doesn't necessarily reflect the worshipping members of the church.
So the situation is not as dire as it was depicted. The article which inspired it was my parish letter which was taking a long-term view and asked what would the situation be in ten years or so if nothing changed. Hopefully, it will and St. Nicholas Church will be here to serve the community for a long time yet. But that does require the commitment of its members and whatever support the community can give.
Revd Peter Boulton-Lea, St Nicholas Church, Thorne.
